symbol of the community of San Miniato and the surrounding area, coat of arms over the centuries has always managed to translate the source image in the past, the contemporary pride and ambition for the future. A symbol behind which shelter in difficult times and to carry with pride in those happier.
Today the meaning assigned to it is perhaps less romantic than that of the past, but is still proving its toll charm.

initially wore the badge as a lioness effigy. Then changed into a lion in 1355 when the City Council sided with the Emperor Charles IV, who granted many privileges to San Miniato (1). Even today the symbol of a lion is characterized by so-called "rampant": it is an animal that expresses strength, courage and, above all, the nobility. The figure supports the foot with only the left hind leg, while the right is lifted from the ground. The front legs are extended forward and right shaking vigorously, a long sword. The lion leans forward, as if to catch prey. Indeed the adjective "rampant" rapiens comes from the Latin meaning "to seize" but also "wins" (2). Coat of Arms contains a phrase:
SIC NOS IN Sceptre REPONIS "
" So we give back to the ancient honors "
(G. Fumagalli , The Ape Latina , Hoepli, Milan, 1975, n. 2403)
expresses this aspiration to recover the prestige of the past. Aspiration now appears that an unknown force in the difficult task of giving and written history.
This short phrase is actually a classical quotation: these five words from dall'Eneide first book, a poem written by the Roman philosopher and poet Virgil (29-19 BC).
After the terrible defeat of Troy, Aeneas and his followers departed from Sicily to the Italian coast time. The goddess Juno was aware that a Trojan race on his way to the coast of Lazio to found a people who have waged war for the destruction of Libya and his beloved city of Carthage. Angry for what would happen, he instigated Aeolus to unleash the Trojan exiles a powerful storm that forced them, thanks to the providential intervention of Neptune, to be wrecked on the African coast.
Venus, mother of Aeneas and motivated by feelings of pity and indignation at the same time, he turned to Jupiter asking for an explanation for leaving Juno to operate against the exiles.
"(...) nos, your progenies, caeli quibus adnuis arcem,
navibus (infandum!) amissis, unius ob iram
prodimuratqueItalis longedisiungimuroris.
Hic pietatis honos? Sic nos in sceptra reponis?”
(Virgilio, Aeneid, Book I, 249-253)
"(...) we, your offspring, which promise the walls of heaven, lost (something unspeakable!) Vessels, to the wrath of one betrayed us and we are separated far from the Italian beaches. This is the reward of virtue? So we give back to the ancient honors? "

At these words Jupiter, with his father do, he turned to Venus asked it to save the fear, because the race will be able to get in Lazio, where Rome will build largest in the world.
Read in its context, the phrase is almost ironic, challenge, driven by despair. E ', however, a sentence interrogative. In the arms of the municipality of San Miniato find the same, but this time yes, almost did not want to leave no doubt and predict future honors.
Who can have it on purpose? What honor could refer? For the radiance of the Swabian dynasty? Municipal autonomy? For benefits achieved by the Lorena?
services and benefits were tied together, almost always paid for the privilege was granted the freedom and subjection to the hardships. It is in this context that more suspects could be just the Florentines. The City of San Miniato, already entered by the end of the thirteenth century in the sphere of influence of the Florentine Republic was finally conquered by this, after a long siege, in 1369, and became an important vicarage, while retaining most of the privileges ( 3). Our hypothesis is enhanced by a further level of reflection: the irony to a people who never had the strength to become autonomous, or the certainty of a future within a growing prestigious Florentine greatness?
The story is well known: San Miniato has always been fought from the outside, still more divided from within, hounded by the choices and overwhelmed by the real problems had to learn, like many other Tuscan towns, which was impossible to choose the best one's destiny and difficult to follow his vocation.
There is this coat of arms ambitious, perhaps ironic, certainly fascinating. They fell the scepters and crowns, but not the strong sense of community in a land rich in history.
This action arises as the development of an article by Luciano Marrucci: The Stadt in Mandorlini Fabrizio (ed.), Almanac Street of the City of San Miniato 2000 , FM Publishing, San Miniato, 2000.
We thank the Municipality of San Miniato, and in particular Councillor with responsibility for Culture Cleary, Mrs. Franca Giani Culture Office and Dr. Francesca Pinochi Office Press for their contribution in the implementation of this intervention.
